Request for Proposals: Status of sustainable farming practices in Better Cotton farmers in Mozambique
Applications Deadline: 31st May 2025
Location: Mozambique
Start Date: 1st July 2025
End Date: 15th February 2026
Description
Better Cotton is the world’s largest cotton sustainability programme. Our mission: to help cotton communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment. In difficult times, we are meeting the challenge head on. Through our network of field-level partners we have provided training on more sustainable farming practices to more than 2.9 million cotton farmers in 26 countries. More than a fifth of the world’s cotton is now grown under the Better Cotton Standard and our membership network includes more than 2,400 members.
Research Questions
We are seeking proposals from skilled individuals or organisations interested in conducting research to answer the following questions, asked separately for each of the two programmes:
•The percentage of Better Cotton farmers that are correctly applying promoted sustainable farming practices.
•What factors help them farmers to correctly adopt the practices.
•What are the main reasons why some farmers do not adopt sustainable farming practices.
•What are the recommendations for increasing the percentage of farmers correctly applying sustainable farming practices.
Sampling – We expect a key part of the research for both partners will be a survey of farmers in each programme. We would like the survey to produce findings that are as accurate as possible, ideally meeting the 95% confidence interval with 5% margin of error for both programmes individually.
We also understand that these programmes have farmers that are spread across a large geographic area which is costly to try and conduct many questionnaires from many locations. Therefore, we want to discuss with applicants what sampling approaches (selection and sample size) they would employ to produce the most accurate data given the budget and geographic challenges of data collection
Scope of Work
The expected outputs will be:
1.Inception Report describing the approach, methodology (data collection methods and sampling) and timeline for the research.
2.Clear data collection tools
3.Draft report with findings per partner against key research questions.
4.Presentation of key findings and recommendations to each partner
5.Final report with findings per partner against key research questions, and recommendations.
6.Raw data sets
We thank all applicants for their interest; however only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
Better Cotton is committed to good practice and transparency in the management of natural, human and financial resources. All applications will be reviewed under the principles and subject to Better Cotton’s policies on equal opportunity, non-discrimination, anti-bribery & corruption and conflict of interest.
